OPTIMIZATION GLOSSARY

301 Redirect

A 301 redirect is an HTTP status code that tells search engines and browsers that a web page has been permanently moved to a new location. This is important for SEO because it ensures that search engines will continue to index the content of the page even though the URL has changed.

When a user visits a URL that is 301 redirected, they will be automatically redirected to the new URL. This means that they will never see the old URL, and all of the traffic and SEO value associated with the old URL will be transferred to the new URL.

301 redirects are most commonly used when a website is redesigned or moved to a new domain. They can also be used to fix broken links or to consolidate duplicate content.

Here are some of the benefits of using 301 redirects for SEO:

  • They help to preserve the SEO value of your pages. When you 301 redirect a page, all of the PageRank and other SEO signals associated with that page are transferred to the new URL. This means that you won’t lose any of your SEO ranking when you make changes to your website.
  • They help to prevent duplicate content issues. If you have two pages on your website with the same content, Google will only index one of them. By 301 redirecting the duplicate page to the original page, you can ensure that only the original page is indexed.
  • They help to improve user experience. When users visit a URL that is 301 redirected, they will be automatically redirected to the new URL. This means that they will never see the old URL, and they won’t have to worry about getting lost or confused.

If you’re making changes to your website, be sure to use 301 redirects to preserve the SEO value of your pages and improve user experience.
