OPTIMIZATION GLOSSARY

Keyword Density

Keyword density in SEO refers to the percentage or frequency at which a specific keyword or phrase appears within a piece of content relative to the total number of words. It used to be a prominent metric in the early days of search engine optimization when webmasters believed that a particular keyword density could help achieve higher rankings.

However, today’s SEO practices have evolved significantly, and while keyword density is still a factor to consider, it’s no longer as critical as it once was. Overloading content with keywords, known as “keyword stuffing,” can lead to penalties from search engines.

To calculate keyword density:

  1. Count the number of times the specific keyword appears in the content.
  2. Divide that number by the total number of words in the content.
  3. Multiply the result by 100 to get the percentage.

For example, if you have a 100-word article and your target keyword appears 5 times, the keyword density would be 5%.

However, rather than obsessing over a specific percentage, it’s more important to focus on creating high-quality, user-friendly content. Search engines like Google have sophisticated algorithms that prioritize content quality, relevance, and user intent over mere keyword frequency. Using keywords naturally and contextually will likely produce better SEO results than rigidly adhering to a set keyword density.
