OPTIMIZATION GLOSSARY

Search Engine

A search engine is a sophisticated software system designed to assist users in finding information stored on the internet. By entering specific keywords or queries into a search engine, users are presented with a list of results, often referred to as search engine results pages (SERPs), that are most relevant to their query.

These results can include websites, images, videos, scholarly articles, and other types of content. The underlying mechanics of a search engine involve web crawlers or bots, which continuously scan the internet to index the content of websites. Algorithms then determine each web page’s relevance based on many factors, such as the use of keywords, the quality of content, and the number of inbound links to the page.

Popular search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo have become indispensable tools in the modern digital age, enabling effortless access to vast information and playing a pivotal role in the digital economy and online visibility.
